In a tiny studio apartment such as mine, there’s a finite amount of space for appliances — or anything, really. The small amount of tchotchkes I have fill my home to the brim, so any shopping excursion includes me bargaining with myself about what I’m willing to give up in order to get this one thing. “This is a really nice salad spinner, but do I want to give up some bowls to make room for it? No.”
As a food lover and avid cook, I’ve had to make my one-person kitchen handle every-day cooking, baking, and random kitchen experiments. As such, I’ve pared down to the must-haves. Here’s my list of tools for saving space in the tiniest of kitchens.
1. Magnetic Knife Strip

Replaces: Knife block
Counter space is prime real estate. Donate the knife block and invest in a good magnetic knife strip to hang on the wall.
2. Immersion Blender

Replaces: Stand blender and some food processor jobs
I love this blender. I don’t know why I didn’t buy one sooner. It makes blending soups and sauces so much easier, salsa is super quick, and I have two words for you: homemade mayonnaise. It’s definitely a sometimes condiment, but there’s no comparison with the store-bought stuff. Here’s one of my fave recipes:

3. Spice Racks

Replaces: A free-for-all in your cabinet.
My cabinets are overflowing with spices from many ethnic food adventures, so some sort of organization was needed. I found these great adjustable racks that have saved my cabinet from falling into disarray.
4. Stand Mixer

So this one doesn’t quite save on space, but it’s well worth the counter real estate. You really can’t beat the time and energy saved when you’re making these fun meringue mushrooms!
5. Pour Over Coffee Carafe

If you’re brewing for more than 3-4 cups, this won’t work for you, but for a personal amount, a pour over is great and brews such better coffee! Leave the water kettle on the stove, and place this small and attractive carafe tucked away until you need to use it.
