The AIP Diet (The Autoimmune Protocol) is used to help heal certain inflammatory issues in the digestive system. The term “autoimmune” means that the body begins to attack itself because it cannot tell the difference between itself and a foreign body. There are dozens of autoimmune disorders — rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, and psoriasis to name a few — and this diet helps eliminate foods that can aggravate or trigger these disorders. The book, The Loving Diet, goes into much more detail about this diet.
Here’s a quick explanation: It is a more buttoned-up version of the Paleo Diet. The difference between the two diets is that in the AIP diet, you also avoid:
- All nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, eggplant, sweet and hot peppers, potatoes)
- Nuts and seeds
- Eggs
- Alcohol
Foods you can still eat:
- Meat, fish, shellfish
- Sea vegetables
- Leafy green vegetables (spinach, endive, herbs, etc.)
- Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc.)
- Root vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, etc.)
- Fruit: berries, citrus fruit, apples, cherries, etc.
- Avocados
- Olive oil and coconut oil
