I’m not sure about you, but I’ve certainly felt like I was dying more than a few times after having taken a particularly potent bite of Mexican food…seeds…there are definitely jalapeño seeds in this bite! I’m gonna need more margaritas over here! But according to the Daily Post, a new chile pepper recently created in North Wales is not only the world’s hottest, but it could actually kill you. (In other words, please don’t eat it, no matter how hardcore you think you are.)

Small but deadly: the Dragon’s Breath chile is the hottest chile in the world. | Image by Daily Post

In fact, this chile pepper—appropriately named Dragon’s Breath—was not actually created for consumption. Mike Smithl, who’s been growing chiles and vegetables for seven years, actually developed it in partnership with Nottingham Trent University to be used as an anesthetic — the chile’s oils are so intense, they can actually numb the skin. To be clear, no human has ever eaten one, and for good reason: it could potentially cause anaphylactic shock and close up a person’s airways. So yeah, just to recap, please don’t eat one.

So if you’re in the mood for something spicy, we recommend sticking to recipes like these:
