The Food and Drug Administration announced recalls that include macaroni and cheese, waffles, and potato chips. These products all have one thing in common. They all include an ingredient produced in a manufacturing facility where salmonella was discovered.

The ingredient is powdered milk made by Valley Milks Products and available for sale to food companies although not directly to consumers. Where consumers may find the powdered milk is in products that used the recalled powdered milk as an ingredient. As CNN reported, the recalled products are:
- TreeHouse Foods Inc. macaroni and cheese
- Fourth Street Barbecue Inc. macaroni and cheese
- Stonewall Kitchen waffle and pancake mixes
- Deep River Snacks kettle chips
- Publix Super Markets pancake and waffle mixes
- Brand Castle LLC monkey bread mix
- Shearer’s Foods LLC kettle chips, potato chips, and nacho chips
- New Hope Mills crepe mix
Although salmonella was found at Valley Milks Products’ manufacturing facility, the salmonella bacteria has not been found in any powdered milk itself, and there have been no reports of sickness caused by any of the recalled products. The recall is a precaution.
The FDA describes salmonella as “a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.”
