Last week, fears of listeria contamination forced Sabra Dipping Company to recall hummus products sold in the US and Canada with a “best buy” date of January 23, 2017 and before.

Recently, the recall has been expanded to include packaged deli sandwiches and snack packs that contain Sabra brand hummus. The recalled products include Taylor Farms Veggie and Hummus Bistro Boxes and Schnucks Vegetable and Hummus Snack Trays, which feature Sabra Hummus Classic dipping cups and were distributed to twenty-three states and the District of Columbia between October 30, 2016 and November 18, 2016.
Also included in the recall are 7-Eleven Chicken and Hummus Sandwiches sold in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Buffalo, NY markets.

Sabra Dipping Company’s initial recall alert confirmed that Listeria monocytogenes had been discovered at the manufacturing site, although listeria was not found in any hummus products themselves.
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s recall announcement, listeria can “cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.” For healthy people, the symptoms are short term but still severe, including “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.”
